Topic
China Goes Global: Implications for the United States
After 25 years of rapid economic growth, China is beginning to make its mark on the global stage. Beijing is one of the largest holders of US government debt. Chinese enterprises are increasing their direct investments abroad, purchasing equity stakes in energy and natural resource firms around the world, and acquiring manufacturing companies as well. China is negotiating multilateral and bilateral free trade arrangements with many of its trading partners, including Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and ASEAN. Beijing seeks to turn some of its state-owned enterprises into "national champions," which are supposed to become less reliant on foreign technology and to develop their own brands as they export abroad. As China "goes global," what are the implications for the US, and for American business? These questions and more will be addressed by Dr. Harry Harding, a well-known China specialist (click here for bio in PDF format).
This is an annual lecture established to commemorate the contributions of former MCBC board member Ambassador John H. Holdridge to the development of constructive diplomatic and business relations between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China.
Annual Meeting
This event also will include the MCBC annual meeting at which the membership will elect the 2006 Board of Directors. Click here for the slate of candidates and their bios).
