Topic
Challenges and Opportunities of Doing Business in China

In the past several months relations between China and the United States have come under increasing strain. The Chinese have been sharply critical of President Obama's meeting with the Dalai Lama and the US government's agreement to sell weapons to Taiwan. Americans have voiced heightened dissatisfaction regarding the value of China's currency and its procurement preferences for domestic products under its program to encourage "indigenous" innovation. Can the world's largest and fastest growing economies constructively work together to enhance our future prosperity creating opportunities for both our people? Or have our increasingly competitive economies along with the differences in our histories, forms of government, and domestic sensitivities become too great to enable us to harness our respective strengths to deal effectively with today's difficult bilateral and global challenges? Our speaker will address these questions. The answers may affect business judgments of US entrepreneurs considering business opportunities in China.

Ambassador Carla A. Hills is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hills & Company, International Consultants, which provides advice to international firms on investment, trade, and risk assessment issues abroad, particularly in emerging market economies. Mrs. Hills served in the Cabinet of President George H.W. Bush as United States Trade Representative and in the Cabinet of President Gerald R. Ford as Secretary of the department of Housing and Urban Development. She also served as Assistant Attorney General, Civil Division, US Department of Justice. (Click here for full bio.)
